Today I realized again that word(s) are a powerful thing.
A dear friend of ours periodically uses the word "retarded" just colloquially and casually. As in, after doing something silly or forgetful, "I'm so retarded."
No harm intended. No way. No how.
But to us that word has a deeper meaning. We have had to hear that our dear Madison is now officially "retarded." Turns out that until you are nine years old you can be just "developmentally delayed" but for some reason when you turn nine, you turn "retarded."
Just a reminder to me that sometimes words are not words, they are sentences.
As in prison.
