Man you got me with this one... on the day my cat died no less. You can imagine the lump in my throat now. My brother has two children who are autistic and hearing the fear in his voice about what the future holds for his children and hearing the heartbreak about how one has finally made a friend, but the other hasn't (and he's a senior)... it's just so hard to bear the thought. BUT I hope Suzie has a marvelous time and that she soars!

Oh, Jeff, thank you for this post. It's beautiful.

Funny how karma always seems to come around and remind us of our errors, isn't it? I have two children diagnosed with autism now, and I'm pretty sure I know what choice on my part brought this to my plate. Let's be thankful for the lesson.

Wonderful post. Madison reminds me of my friend Miram who has ridden the "short bus" for 20 years. Miram and I went to the same church. I have to say that many times, Miram had a more active life than I did! While I sat home on a Sat. night, bemoaning my singleness, Miram (and her basketball team with Special Olympics) was having sleep overs, dances, trips to the mall etc. She had two jobs. One was to pass out locks at the Y and I have to tell you she was the friendliest "hello" many of the gym rats ever got. She knew all their names and really did her job with pride. She also worked at a florist shop. I have since moved and I no longer see Miram every Sunday. Thanks for bringing her to mind this morning!

Thanks for telling me about your friend. Madison has "jobs" around school each day - shredding papers in administartion and picking up carts to go back to the librbary. She gets an amazing sense of accomplishment and pride in doing these things.
